Keynote Speaker ENIS/NISIS-MIDA Summer School 2022 [PART 2]

David Kloos is a research historian and anthropologist who focuses on Southeast Asian Muslims. He is a senior fellow at the Royal Netherlands Institute of Southeast Asian and Caribbean Studies (KITLV) in the Netherlands. He developed a new research project on the impact of climate change on the KITLV - NIOO - NIAS research project " Climate Change and Governance in Indonesia and the Caribbean : A Pilot Program on Marine Protected Areas " since 2021 .

Kloos studied history at Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam Netherlands. He obtained his PhD from the same university as his dissertation on Islam in Aceh, Indonesia (2013). After that, she undertook the NWO funded project 'Veni' on women's Islamic authority and public communication in Malaysia and Indonesia (2016-2020). He was also involved in a documentation project called 'Recording the Future: An Audiovisual Archive of Everyday Life in Indonesia in the 21st Century.'

His interests are in the study of religion, gender, colonialism, violence, local politics, and climate change. She is currently researching " Women 's Islamic Leadership in Southeast Asia " . Her current research focuses on how women's religious authorities (preachers, religious scholars, and politicians) have become part of the public sphere in Malaysia and Indonesia. Most of his research focuses on the relationship between the state, religious authorities and Muslims in Aceh, Indonesia.
